Curriculum Inquiry Writing Fellowship and Writers’ Retreat
Call for Nominations 2025
June 16–21, in person in Toronto
Nominations for the first stage of review due October 25, 2024

The editors of Curriculum Inquiry (CI) are pleased to invite nominations for the 2025 Curriculum Inquiry Writing Fellowship (CIWF) and Writers’ Retreat, to be hosted by the editorial team of CI and held in Toronto from June 16 to 21, 2025. Up to six fellows will be selected to participate in this Writers’ Retreat, which will include a series of writing workshops, feedback sessions, opportunities for mentorship, and writing over five days, culminating in potential publication in a future issue of Curriculum Inquiry.

The CIWF seeks to support early career scholars, including advanced doctoral students (who have completed data collection and are writing their dissertations), recent graduates, and early career faculty (who obtained their doctoral degree no earlier than January of 2021), who are contributing to new directions in curriculum studies. We are particularly interested in work that emphasizes critical, anti-racist, decolonizing, Indigenous, trans, queer, disability, and alternative approaches that seek to “Brown” or otherwise interrupt hegemonic and normative approaches to curriculum studies. Nominations for emerging Indigenous and Black scholars and scholars of colour, as well as disabled (crip, mad, sick), Two-Spirit/Indigiqueer, trans, non-binary, and queer scholars of colour, are particularly encouraged. Please note that authors who have previously published in CI are not eligible.

The fellows will work with members of the CI editorial team toward the development of an article-length manuscript to be considered for publication in the journal. Each selected fellow will be expected to submit an early draft of 3000 to 5000 words at least four weeks before the beginning of the retreat. All travel expenses will be covered.

We will accept nominations in two stages. For the first stage, due October 25, 2024, the nomination must include:

  1. Fellowship application to be completed online by nominee, including the name of a nominator (e.g., thesis supervisor, department chair, or mentor) who has agreed to write a nomination letter if the nominee is selected for the second stage of review;

  2. Curriculum Vitae;

  3. 250–300 word abstract and one-page outline of the proposed manuscript to be developed (i.e., a new and original work to be developed during the retreat). The outline might include section headings and a sequenced list of proposed themes or topics to be addressed in the manuscript. The outline will include a brief description of how these themes are connected to and/or in support of the proposed paper’s theme.

We will ask selected nominees to submit additional materials for the second stage of review. These materials will be due December 13, 2024 and include:

  1. Nomination letter up to a maximum of two pages from a thesis supervisor, department chair, or mentor who can comment on writing skills, background, scholarship potential, and relevance of the nominee’s work to the aims and scope of Curriculum Inquiry;

  2. 30004000 word unpublished, sole-authored, academic writing sample.

Nominations will be evaluated using the following criteria: alignment with the aims and scope of the journal; innovative and critical perspective on or approach to curriculum studies; strong writing skills; emerging record of publication or presentations.

We will notify all nominees by November 8, 2024 to let them know if we are requesting additional materials from them for the second stage of review. We will communicate the final results of our selection process to shortlisted nominees by January 31, 2025. Please click here to submit a nomination.
